LON149173 GB.London. Spitalfields. From the book project 'Undercover Spitalfields', depicting life at London's iconic Old Spitalfields Market marking the 120 year anniversary of this historic site. Originally completed in 1893, Spitalfields is London’s oldest market and a unique visitor experience.Beetle in Tobacco Tin £10 down from £14 Trader Karen 31, from Sussex. Speciality Curiosities Priciest item Taxidermy duck £70 Cheapest item Cigarette cards £1The market is an outstanding example of nineteenth century architecture and is currently a cultural hub; a mecca for artists, designers and creative start-ups.'Undercover Spitalfields' is shot at both day and night, following the market and surrounding areas across various transitional stages, including the arrival and set up of the traders, the eerie stillness of the unoccupied market at night, the bustle of Brick Lane’s 24 hour bagel shops and the buzz of Saturday night patrons of the area’s legendary pubs. It captures the area’s vibrant and growing community both centrally and within a wider geography, encompassing the financial centre of the City of London to the west, and fashionable Shoreditch to the north. The area symbolizes one of the most significant and rapidly developing districts in London. This new publication includes specially commissioned text from architectural critic, Jonathan Glancy. 'Undercover Spitalfields' is a testament to the community, its cultural dynamism and commercial activity. The book was commissioned by the owners of the Market, Ballymore Group,2013

alb4363891 Goliathus, Print, The Goliath beetles (named after the biblical giant Goliath) are any of the five species in the genus Goliathus. Goliath beetles are among the largest insects on Earth, if measured in terms of size, bulk and weight. They are members of subfamily Cetoniinae, within the family Scarabaeidae. Goliath beetles can be found in many of Africa's tropical forests, where they feed primarily on tree sap and fruit. Little appears to be known of the larval cycle in the wild, but in captivity, Goliathus beetles have been successfully reared from egg to adult using protein-rich foods such as commercial cat and dog food. Goliath beetles measure from 60–110 millimetres (2.4–4.3 in) for males and 50–80 millimetres (2.0–3.1 in) for females, as adults, and can reach weights of up to 80–100 grams (2.8–3.5 oz) in the larval stage, though the adults are only about half this weight. The females range from a dark brown to silky white, but the males are normally brown/white/black or black/white.

alb1945287 Long-horned beetle, Macrodontia cervicornis. Vulnerable. Illustration signed RN (Richard Nodder). Handcolored copperplate engraving from George Shaw and Frederick Nodder's "The Naturalist's Miscellany" 1796.. Frederick Polydore Nodder (1751~1801?) was a gifted natural history artist and engraver. Nodder honed his draftsmanship working on Captain Cook and Joseph Banks' Florilegium and engraving Sydney Parkinson's sketches of Australian plants. He was made "botanic painter to her majesty" Queen Charlotte in 1785. Nodder also drew the botanical studies in Thomas Martyn's Flora Rustica (1792) and 38 Plates (1799). Most of the 1,064 illustrations of animals, birds, insects, crustaceans, fishes, marine life and microscopic creatures for the Naturalist's Miscellany were drawn, engraved and published by Frederick Nodder's family. Frederick himself drew and engraved many of the copperplates until his death. His wife Elizabeth is credited as publisher on the volumes after 1801. Their son Richard Polydore (1774~1823) was responsible for the plates signed RN or RPN. Richard exhibited at the Royal Academy and became botanic painter to King George III. The illustrations are characterized by vivid colouring, fine detail, and a certain posed stiffness in the ornithological portraits, perhaps because they were sketched from dead specimens.
